Quick-Thinking Officers Save Area Man From Hanging Himself, Police Say

The incident took place in Hampden County in Springfield around 11:!5 a.m., Monday, April 25.

Springfield Police Officers responded to the 800 block of Boston Road for a report of a suicidal man, said Ryan Walsh, spokesman for the Springfield Police.

When officers arrived a man was in a tree with a belt around his neck. Officers attempted to talk him down but when the man saw additional emergency vehicles he let go of a branch and was actively attempting to hang himself, Walsh said.

Quick-thinking officers moved a police cruiser under the tree and jumped on top of the cruiser. Arriving Springfield firefighters and AMR paramedics joined them as they pushed the man’s legs up to relieve tension, Walsh said.

Officers then boosted a fellow officer up next to the male and the officer was able to cut the belt with a seat belt cutter. Officers successfully lowered the man down to the cruiser and then onto an awaiting stretcher, police said. 

“This was a great effort by all our officers involved. It was quick-thinking to get the cruiser underneath the tree in a very time-sensitive situation. I’m proud of our officers who helped save this man’s life today,” said Springfield Police Superintendent Cheryl Clapprood.

After he was saved, the man was transported to Baystate Hospital for an evaluation.
